US DOE advisory board members visited JNFL!

The Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC) on America's Nuclear Future, advisory board to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) made a visit to our Reprocessing Plant on February 9th.

The aim of the visit was to study the efficiency of spent fuel reprocessing as well as other aspects on nuclear fuel cycle, and investigate whether the reprocessing option would be effective option in the United States.

The mission was organized by co-chairman Brent Scowcroft, former National Security Advisor to the President, Mark Ayers, President, Building and Construction Trades Department, and Allison Macfarlane, Associate Professor of Environmental Science and Policy, George Mason University. President Kawai, Aomori Governor Mimura and Rokkasho Mayor Furukawa greeted them at the entrance of our visitors center.

The discussion was made on wide range of issues including such topics like "Japan's selection process of high-level waste disposal site", and "Local reaction regarding interim storage of spent fuel"…, some of which were beyond our company's mission. Judging from the fact, they were deeply engaged in challenging mission of US for the nuclear fuel cycle policy.

Mr. Scowcroft admired Japanese nuclear fuel-cycle policy and our achievement, responding to the media interview. Also, Mr. Ayers commented that he was quite impressed by the integrated facility layout within single site, and valued the site tour which was more to observe than he expected.

Although the visit schedule was quite tight, massive exchange of views and opinions was made among all participants all through the visit.
