Monthly Press Conference

Today, President Kawai made monthly press conference in Aomori City and talked about the status of present activities at the reprocessing plant, this year’s development of our businesses, and other topics.

Following is the outline.

Status of present activities at Reprocessing Plant

  • Regarding the effluent leak into the temperature gauge protection tube within the High-Active Liquid Waste Concentrator, we obtained government approval on January 18 for restoration-related measures.
  • Currently, we have begun equipment manufacturing and have also begun preparation work for equipment installation at the site. We estimate it will take approximately two months to complete the said work.
  • As for work within the vitrification cell, we began installation work for the B-line melter temperature gauges last week. The actual installation work itself has been completed, and we plan to undergo a government pre-service inspection as soon as possible.
  • After completion of the B-line temperature gauges installation work, we will conduct an inspection of the vitrification cell power manipulator. Following this, we plan to carry out installation work for the A-line melter temperature gauges.

This year's development of our businesses

Reprocessing business

We intend to finish up the work of "equipment inspection" within the vitrification cell, as well as "equipment improvement" such as increasing temperature gauges, and carry on to the "Pre-Confirmation Test" which was the main objectives when we have set up the new schedule last September.

This means that this year will be a quite important year for making all the necessary preparation work and to be ready for the next year's completion of the construction.

Enrichment business

We plan to replace some existing centrifuges and commence operation of new centrifuges this September. Manufacturing was completed by December of last year for half of the new type of centrifuges that will be replaced. We will steadily and definitively proceed with each of the tasks required toward operation commencement.

MOX fuel fabrication business

We will begin full-scale excavation in April, and begin construction of the vital "fuel fabrication building" this fall.

We intend to submit the 2nd application of the construction permit, which is divided in 4 phases, as soon as the preparation is ready.

We will steadily proceed with the construction work with zero accidents toward projected completion in March 2016.

Waste management business

The expansion of the storage building to deal with the vitrified waste returned from overseas is scheduled for completion by the end of the next month.

Since this year is very important for us to establish the foundations of our extensive business field, we shall put our full efforts to realize this objective, with discreet and steady manner, putting "safety" as the first priority.
