Press Release Concerning the Start of the Inspection of the Phase III Returned Vitrified Waste

JNFL announced that the preparation for the inspection of the 60 vitrified canisters which were received in its facility on 13 March has been completed and the inspection will be started from April 6.

1. Date of the inspection

The inspection will be started from 9:00 AM, 6 April 1998.

2. The work so far

After receiving 3 of the transport casks, one of the casks was moved to the Cask Inspection Room by the Overhead Traveling Crane and Cask Carrier. The other 2 casks will be temporarily placed in the Cask Temporary Storage Area in the Vitrified Waste Accepting Building.

The cask was transferred to the Vitrified Waste Unloading Room and the vitrified canisters were removed one by one from the cask by the Overhead Traveling Crane, and all of the 20 vitrified canisters were put in the Vitrified Waste Temporary Storage Supporting Structure.

The inspecting equipment for measuring the amount of heat emission, radioactive levels and the surface cleanliness, was adjusted.

3. Remarks

The inspection will be done per cask(20 canisters) at a time and after receiving the government's certificate of confirmation they will be put in the Storage Pit.

Before starting the inspection of the other casks, JNFL plans to check all the equipment for several weeks to make perfect inspection.
