Completion of Vitrified Waste Storage Building Annex B


Vitrified Waste Storage Center, which had been under expansion work since June 19, 2004, completed and passed its pre-operation inspection today.

1. Overview of Vitrified Waste Storage Building Annex B

Major structure : Reinforced concrete (select portions are steel-framed reinforce concrete or steel framework)
2 floors above ground, 2 floors below ground; approx. 47m (north-south) by approx. 34m (east-west)
Height : Approx. 14m from ground (coolant gas exhaust shaft is approx. 35m)
Building area : Approx. 1,800m2
Gross area : Approx. 4,500m2
Storage capacity : 1,440 canisters of vitrified waste (2,880 canisters when including existing space)
  • 2 storage pits
  • 80 thimble tubes per storage pit
  • 9 vitrified waste units per thimble tube

2. Major events leading up to construction completion

July 30, 2001 Application for a license to expand the storage building
December 8, 2003 The license approved
June 19, 2004 Expansion work begun
June 8, 2006 Construction work begun
April 25, 2011 Pre-operation inspection certificate received (completion)
