Expanding storage capacity for low-active solid waste, generated at Spent fuel Receiving and Storage Facility


The licence for expanding storage capacity for low-active solid waste, generated at Spent Fuel Receiving & Storage Facility in Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant has been approved by the authority today.

JNFL applied for this licence to the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry on February 19th 2010, which was partly revised on June 30, 2010 and September 13, 2010.

The outline of this application is as follows.

(1) Establishing a new storage room which utilizes the empty space within the Spent fuel Receiving and Storage Building, with a maximum capacity of approx. 430 drums (200L drum equivalent).

(2) Pre-operation use of portions of the Low-Active Waste Storage Building during active testing of the Main Plant.
Approx. 7,500 drums out of its approx. 50,000 drum maximum capacity can be used.

(3) Establishing a new Storage Building with a maximum capacity of 13,500 drums.
